Is Healthy Family Farms of Santa Paula Legit?

healthyfamilyfarm

I’m discovering that there is quite a bit of controversy around Healthy Family Farms of Santa Paula.   Not just about the raw milk issue that I totally support them on, but about allegations of fraud.  I’ve been singing their praises for over a year now, and I’ve even been to the farm for one of their open house tours.   The people there seem so earnest in what they do that I would have a hard time believing that they would just re-package commercial meat and eggs to meet the weekly demand.  However a site called www.UnhealthyFamilyFarm.com has popped up and has some compelling photo evidence of fraud.  Having been to the farm I actually recognize the areas where those photos were taken and can verify they’re on the farm.  They also have a rap sheet on the owner that’s several pages long.  I can’t verify that the evidence is real though.  Does anyone have any more information about this?

Beach House Tacos gets it right!

Beach House Tacos in Ventura

Beach House Tacos in VenturaIt’s funny when something comes a long that you didn’t realize you needed so badly.   When Beach House Tacos opened where the old burger and bait shack used to be on the Ventura Pier I didn’t think much of it.   Then last week I was biking down the boardwalk with a friend and we stopped at the pier and realized we were really hungry.  I had never noticed that there really isn’t a quick cheap restaurant nearby.  At least not one where I would be willing to eat – the aforementioned burger and bait shack was never an option.

So we checked out the menu at Beach House.  What a great find!  The fish tacos are around $3 and you can choose grilled or fried in a few different variations.  I loved the Specialty taco with fried fish… the fish is lightly battered and not greasy at all.  The lettuce and fresh salsa really round it out nicely.   The Shrimp tacos had huge cubes of avocado, fresh lettuce and cherrySpecialty Fish TacoShrimp Taco tomatoes.  Not what you usually find in fish tacos but it works – they really get it right.  The only thing I had that I didn’t care for are their chips… but that’s a personal preference.  They use the thick tortillas that are almost like pitas for their chips and I prefer the lighter type.  And if you see “spicy garlic shrimp” tacos on the menu be warned – they are REALLY spicy.  They’re covered in seeds from the peppers.  I also don’t recommend the “traditional” tacos.  All you get is three tortillas and a spoonful of meat.  Not very interesting considering how great the other tacos are.

Can’t wait to go back!  I may even start riding my bike more just to stop here for a $3 taco. =)

Healthy Family Farms Launches Online Store

healthyfamilyfarms

Good news – Healthy Family Farms has made it even easier to order locally-raised and humanely harvested beef, chicken and poultry. They’ve launched their online store at www.healthyfamilyfarms.net where you can place your order for pick up and some of the area farmer’s markets. I’ve visited the farm which is located right here in Ventura, and I was blown away by the commitment and professionalism of everyone involved.  They have open houses once in a while and I highly recommend trying to make it to one.  When was the last time you visited the farm where your dinner was raised?  Here you can do just that, and lie in the grass listening to the sounds of all the happy animals.  Of course if you buy your meat at Von’s the last thing you’d probably want to do is actually see where it comes from…

Buying 100% grass-fed beef in Ventura County

I’m trying to pull together a list of places in Ventura County that offer 100% grass-fed beef.  I’m hoping to list restaurants and markets, so if you know of any please add to the list via the comments section.  I only want to list 100% grass-fed, though… there are some labels that are misleading.  I’ve seen some that say “Grass Finished”, which could mean they are 100%, or could mean they let the cow out to graze for a couple of days before slaughter.  Also at Trader Joe’s they have “100% Vegetarian Fed” beef… that’s great to know they didn’t serve the cow meat (a leading cause of mad cow disease), but it says nothing about being grass fed.  Stuffing a cow full of corn on a feedlot qualifies as “100% Vegetarian Fed” but it’s also 100% cruel.  I’ll keep adding to this list as I find more:

Markets

  • Rainbow Bridge in Ojai
  • Trader Joe’s does have 100% grass fed ground beef.  Check the label carefully though!
  • Nick Ranch (online ordering)
  • Novy Ranches
  • Lassen’s – however I personally will not shop there because they supported Prop 8 in the store’s name.

Restaurants

Free-range natural chicken in Ventura County

I just had the best chicken I’ve ever tasted.   Was it the actual flavor of the chicken, or was it my mind telling me it tasted better because it was raised on a real farm and not in a processing plant?  Well, either way I can tell you it was delicious and I highly recommend it.  I ordered it from Healthy Family Farms and then picked it up at the Ojai Farmers Market.   I think it was $5/pound, so it wasn’t a huge increase over Trader Joe’s.  The farm is in Santa Paula and they’re open on Sundays, so I’m looking forward to visiting.  They also have beef, pork, eggs, ducks and goat cheese which I hope to try when I visit.  I’ll post an update after I do.

Sulfuric Acid in High Fructose Corn Syrup

Yep, that’s right.  I was watching a documentary called King Corn (which I highly recommend) where two recent college grads decide they want to try to make “all-natural” high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)  in their kitchen.  The HFCS industry wouldn’t let them bring cameras into their factories so they did it themselves.  Here is the list of ingredients required to make HFCS:

  • Corn (an inedible version awash in pesticides and fertilizer)
  • Water
  • Sulfuric Acid
  • Alpha-amylase
  • Glucoamylase
  • Glucose isomerase

Yikes!  I know the HFCS industry is spending millions trying to convince people that this stuff is no worse than pure cane sugar, but it has SULFURIC ACID in it.  I’ll grant them the fact that there are no clinical studies showing that HFCS is directly linked to much of our modern day malaise, but… it has SULFURIC ACID in it! It’s also in thousands of foods, and has made all of those foods cheaper to produce which has opened the door to Super Sized Portions.   There’s the rub, and the reason why when HFCS came on the market in the early 80′s the obesity rate skyrocketed.  That’s probably not because of the chemical make-up of HFCS, but more likely because suddenly using corn syrup instead of sugar allowed food manufacturers to cut costs and increase portions.  And so we got the Super Big Gulp for 59 cents which would never have been possible if we still used natural but expensive cane sugar. Remember when you had to pay for refills of Coke?  Not anymore, thanks to HFCS!  Drink all you want!  Wait… is that really a good thing?  Suddenly I have the image of the Big Tobacco executives swearing under oath to congress that they unanimously think their product is NOT addictive.

Thankfully we have intuition, and if yours isn’t telling you there might be something wrong with this stuff then it may need a tune up.  I swore off HFCS 10 days ago and after the initial shock it hasn’t been that hard to avoid.  It takes preparation though as many of your fast foods and prepared foods are loaded with it (and sodium BTW).  So I spend a little more time cooking fresh meats and veggies and less time surfing the web.  That’s probably a win/win.

The HFCS lobby will tell you that we are responsible for controlling ourselves and not over-consuming their product.  But then they put their cheap sweet goo in everything and offer it in portion sizes that are absurd to get us to consume more of it.  All in the name of increasing profits by shoving more product down our throats.  Not a business I want to be in.

If you know of any restaurants in Ventura County that specifically avoid foods and sauces containing HFCS please share them in the comments section.
